The poor weather cast a shadow over this year’s Grass Court Championships and very few competitors managed to play on grass at Aorangi Park. The Tournament Director and Referee’s superhuman efforts to get matches could be played resulted in players scattering to indoor courts at The Queen’s Club, Lakeside and the National Tennis Centre as well as those at he All England Club and, somehow, every event was finished.
Many of the singles events ran true to form, with the top-seeded players wining through. Seb Jackson was tested by Simon Bramwell in the 35s semi-final but, having survived the first set tie-break, took his place in the final where he beat second seed, Andy Burgoyne. In the 40s, Andrew Evans, from his position of fifth seed, had a comfortable route to the final where he impressively won all the key points against Johnny Barr. James Turner won through a strong draw in the 35s, beating first top seed, Chris Hearn, in the semi and then Simon Curtis in the final. Hearn, though, made sure of a trophy by retaining the doubles title .with Eric Knowles.
