This year, fourteen club teams were invited by Vets Tennis GB to represent Great Britain in the European Seniors Club Championships 2009. For the first time in several years, two teams returned as winners, one took second place and another achieved the bronze medal position.
Thorpe Wood Esporta from Peterborough moved on from the 35s age level to compete in the 45s in Rome. The team of Steffan Eggmayer, Graham Neale, Nick Fulwood, Steve Brett, Jeremy Bates and captain Alan Jordan secured victory with a sequence of convincing wins over LTC Emmen (NED), Cannolieri Roma (ITA), Ferratella Sporting Club (ITA) and finally Castiglione (ITA). The achievement was noted by Tennis Europe as breaking the dominance of Germany and Italy in all the other men's age groups this year.

Women's 35 Inter-County Championships, 2009 |
|
The Women's 35 Inter-County weekend was blessed with glorious weather which induced a happy and relaxed atmoshere right up to the final day when the outcome of Group 1 reached an exciting climax.
At the start of Sunday, Leicestershire, the holders, had won two matches, while Devon and Middlesex had each won one. Leicestershire needed to beat Devon to retain the title. If they failed to do so, and Middlesex beat Sussex, the title would go to Middlesex and Leicestershire would be relegated! In the very last match on court, Leicestershire finally achieved their win over Devon by 10-8 in the champions tie-break1 This left Middlesex as runners-up and Devon relegated along with Sussex.
Lancashire and Yorkshire will replace them in Group1 in 2010.

2009 Men's 35 Inter-County Championships |
|
The Men's 35 Inter-County Championships were held at Devonshire Park, Eastbourne, from Friday 31 July to Sunday 2 August. After having only one day's play the previous year hopes were high for fine weather this time, but sadly, rain intervened at lunchtime on the Saturday to wash out all the results achieved on that day so that the final outcome was calculated on two days only.
The reigning champion team, Dorset, lived up to its top billing with the captain, Matt Coombes, and Andy Phillips, leading the way in singles and doubles and recording wins over Hampshire and IOW and Leicestershire. That said, the results were not wholly straighforward with several matches requiring the 10-point tie-break to decide the winners. The two singles matches on the Sunday, which could be said to have decided the title, both went Dorset's way on the tie-break as Coombes beat Steve Brett and Phillips beat Ian Hughes to secure a 2-rubber lead and a firm grip on the match.
