South of England Championships, 2009 |

An increased entry, bright and shiny weather and eager competitors all contributed to the success of SOE week. We welcomed two groups of Italian players and players from Germany, Belgium, Spain,Netherlands, Australia and South Africa added considerably to the cosmopolitan flavour of the event. Some regular favourites were missing but the competitive edge was high and some excellent tennis was in view.
Danny Ward overcame Gianluca of Italy in the semi-final of the 35s to take his place in the final where he met Steve Davies who had survived first a close match with Brian Mileham followed by a tight 7-6 7-6 battle with Mike Roi. Danny and Steve split sets in the final, before the latter retired as an oldinjury flared up. Giovanni Medori of Italy was unseeded but reached the final by way of a three-set semi-final with Spain's Juan Coto, His colleague Massimo Pennesi failed to cope with the high wind blowing arouod Court One and succumbed to David Mills who had benefited from the retirement of Adam Boucher through injury in the previous round. Giovanni played a superb match in the final to take the title comfortably.
John Draper was a convincing winner of the 80 singles, but there was disappointment in the 85s when one player in the round robin of three dropped out making the event unviable.
The Women's events were not well supported, but there was plenty of enthusiasm. In the evevnts played as round robins, Julie Sinkins retained her 35s title, Rachel Apsey was the 45s winner, Nina Crane took the 55s and June Peck again won the 60s. The only knockout draw was in the 70s in which June Pearce pushed Jean Porter toa second set tie-break finish in the final.

The British Open Veterans' Clay Court Championships 2009 |
|
Completed draw sheets of the The British Open Clay Court Championships 2009 may be found by clicking here.
This year, apart from a drizzly Wednesday, the tournament was blessed by glorious sunshine, partticularly on the last three days. The entry was a little lower than in 2008 and the Committee was saddened by the poor entry in several Women's events which had to be decided by round robins because they attracted fewer than eight enties.
Some 35 highly-ranked overseas players entered, several of whom carried off prizes. Peter Adrigan (GER) ,holder of the Men's 60 singles title, moved up to 65s and reached the final, but the combination of a virus and the skills of Vittorio Monaco (ITA) saw him suffer his second defeat at Bournemouth. Ivica Tolic (CRO) was top-seeded in the Men's 40 and duly made his way to the final to meet local favourite, Matt Coombes, who had eased his way to that stage and followed up by crushing Tolic 6-1 6-1 in a hard-hitting, tactical campaign.
Guido Gualandi (ITA) lived up to his top billing by beating Godfrey Evans in a three-set 55s final and Klein (GER) featured in the 70s final but had to give best to Clive Hutchings who took the title unseeded. Henri Crutchet (FRA) was taken to three sets by Ken Bate in the 75s final and Neville Halligan (AUS) won the Men's 85 round robin of four competitors. Nanda Fischer (GER) continued her winning ways at Bournemouth dropping to Jean Porter the only five games she had conceded in the entire 70s event.
