The British Open Veterans' Clay Court Championships 2009 |
|
Completed draw sheets of the The British Open Clay Court Championships 2009 may be found by clicking here.
This year, apart from a drizzly Wednesday, the tournament was blessed by glorious sunshine, partticularly on the last three days. The entry was a little lower than in 2008 and the Committee was saddened by the poor entry in several Women's events which had to be decided by round robins because they attracted fewer than eight enties.
Some 35 highly-ranked overseas players entered, several of whom carried off prizes. Peter Adrigan (GER) ,holder of the Men's 60 singles title, moved up to 65s and reached the final, but the combination of a virus and the skills of Vittorio Monaco (ITA) saw him suffer his second defeat at Bournemouth. Ivica Tolic (CRO) was top-seeded in the Men's 40 and duly made his way to the final to meet local favourite, Matt Coombes, who had eased his way to that stage and followed up by crushing Tolic 6-1 6-1 in a hard-hitting, tactical campaign.
Guido Gualandi (ITA) lived up to his top billing by beating Godfrey Evans in a three-set 55s final and Klein (GER) featured in the 70s final but had to give best to Clive Hutchings who took the title unseeded. Henri Crutchet (FRA) was taken to three sets by Ken Bate in the 75s final and Neville Halligan (AUS) won the Men's 85 round robin of four competitors. Nanda Fischer (GER) continued her winning ways at Bournemouth dropping to Jean Porter the only five games she had conceded in the entire 70s event.

Four Nations Championships 2009 |
|

The Four Nations Championships, Group A for age groups 35, 34 and 50, were held at the Bolton Arena over the weekend of 2 to 4 May. There were some very competitive matches, many of them culiminating in the deciding 10-point tie-break which ensured some exciting and anxious monents for the spectators. The Scotland team was keen to retain the overall title won two years ago and, with the points total for the Scottish and English teams particularly close, the final outcome rested on the result of the Women;s 35 doubles match, almost the last on court on the final day. Had England not won this rubber, calculators would have been needed to separate the two teams. To the referee's relief, England's Caroline Varda and Jo Shepherd beat Deirdre Johnston and Jan Oliphant in two sets to regain the trophy for England.
England, in the end, had won four age groups, the Women's 35, 45 and 50 and the Men's 50. Wales secured a historic victory in the Men's 45 with wins against England and Ireland and.Scotland retained Men's 35 title when, on the last day the singles matches were split whwn Johnny Barr took the second string singles against David Mills for Scotland, but Rob Loosemore pulled off a tight match with Scott Nisbel by a 12-10 margin in the final tie-break. Barr and Austin Coventry sealed the match for Scotland with a straight sets defeat of Mills and Andrew Moraghan.
Any one who wishes to see the full results should email vw@vetstennisgb and they will be forwarded. Summary results are given below. Prizes were presented at the close of play by Peter Bretherton, Deputy President of the Lawn Tennis Association.
