Selection Criteria for GB teams 2010/11 |
|
This is an updated version of the criteria previously published on the web site. The amended criteria will apply to the ITF World Team Championships taking place for the Super Seniors in Antalya, Turkey on clay, 11 to16 October 2010, for the Seniors in Christchurch, New Zealand on hard, 21 to 26 February 2011, and also for the Super Seniors in Antalya, Turkey on clay, 10 to15 October 2011.
International selection will take into account results in the three British National Championships over the previous period of twelve months. If this is inconclusive, then results over the twelve months before this will be considered. If these results prove inconclusive, performance in other British and International competitions will be considered; play off trials might also be used.
For selection of the Men’s and Women’s 35 teams only, the following events and criteria will be considered in addition to the criteria set out in the previous paragraph. Previous World rankings, previous GB rankings, International events, Aegon Team Tennis results, Inter County Championships (County Week and Indoor), the National 35 Championships and the 35 County event in Eastbourne.
An exception to the selection criteria may be considered In the case of an outstanding player. In this connection, players who are involved in performance coaching within British Tennis may be considered..
Inappropriate behaviour in competition could be detrimental to team performance and will be deemed a bar to selection.
Players should note that selection for Antalya 2010, of Men’s and Women’s teams (60, 65, 70, 75 and Men’s 80) will take place on 9 June 2010.
Selection for Seniors teams (35, 40,45, 50 and 55) will take place following the British Open Veterans' Grass Court Championships at Aorangi Park, The All England Lawn Tennis Club, 8 to14 August 2010.
Selection for Antalya, Turkey 2011, will take place after the British Open Clay Court Championships, Bournemouth, in May 2011.

Setting aside the fading memory of rain on the first Saturday and Tuesday, this year’s Clay Court Championships at Bournemouth will be largely remembered for the glorious warm and sunny weather of the last four days and the quality of the matches played out before appreciative spectators in the semis and finals.
A key upset was the defeat of world number one, Pierre Godfroid (BEL) in the Men’s 50 singles, by Peter Wingrove, a man new to veterans’ tennis and to Vets Tennis GB, having preferred to hone his game against younger opponents in France. His speed and accuracy enabled him to get the better of Alec Allen and Harvey Becker in succession before robbing Godfroid of the title in straight sets.
Vittorio Monaco (ITA) was dominant in the Men’s 70 allowing no-one more than a single game except for Don Shears who was making his first outing following injury. His final opponent, Clive Hutchings, was able with Roger Ambrose to level the score between them by winning the doubles convincingly.
In other men’s events, there were some tremendous performances. Seb Jackson battled against Tom Spinks for close on three hours to win finally 7-5 in the third set; Paul Scullard came through a similar tussle against Matt Coombes in the 40s and in the 50s, Simon Curtis who had survived a tense encounter with Graeme Adams earlier, put up a highly creditable showing in taking seven games from Nick Fulwood who had, to that point conceded only two games.
Paul French reigned in the 55s events but was taken to three sets in the singles final by Martin Cornish before taking the doubles title with Jeremy Trafford and with ease. Jeremy Woods had a great run in the 60 singles with a hard-won defeat of Richard Tutt in the semis and of Olly Rogger in the final and not to be outdone, Nigel Barker pulled off a similar feat in winning the Men’s 65 singles.
The Women’s categories were no less eventful. Nina Topper played a superb match to pip Jo Louis to the 40s singles title, winning 6-4 in the third set, and then joined the 35s singles winner, Michelle Oldham, to prevail in the doubles also. Lesley O’Halloran of Ireland was the 45s winner and Anthea Stewart again demonstrated her hold over Christine French with a straight sets win in the 50s.
The 55s final, again between Pauline Fisher and Sally Freeman, resulted in a win for Fisher who recovered from a first set deficit to win in three. Marjory Love was as efficient as ever, with an uncomplicated progress through the 60 singles, but the fight for the Women’s 65 was another matter as Jacky Boothman and Frances MacLennan teased out a three and a half hour battle of long rallies ending in a 7-6 final set win for MacLennan.
A regular visitor from Germany, Nanda Fischer, was again too strong for the rest of the 70s draw while June Pearce’s relative youth saw her safely through the 75s.
There were some entertaining doubles matches, too, and all the detailed results may be seen above.

England wins Four Nations Championships |
|

The Veterans’ Four Nations Championships in the age groups 55, 60 and 65 for both Men and Women were played at David Lloyd Renfrew, Scotland, in a most enjoyable and highly competitive event meticulously managed by John Stevenson of Tennis Scotland, the referee. The format of two tie-break sets with a champions’ tie break to decide if needed, produced some very close results and over the three days numerous matches went the distance. Ascrutiny of the England scores shows that the players won thirtenn of these out of sixteen played!
The overall result was a win for England when four of the age group teams ended in first position in their groups. They were the Men’s 55, 60 and 65 and the Women’s 55. The remaining Women’s teams achieved second place to Scotland whose team included strong international players in Marjory Love and Christine Lockhart in the 60s and Frances MacLennan in the 65s. The table below shows the points awarded (four for a win, three for second place and so on) and how all the nations finished.
